What Is Zakaat?

Zakaat is an obligatory act of worship that purifies eligible wealth and supports those entitled to receive it.

Zakaat is one of the five pillars of Islam. It requires eligible Muslims to give a prescribed portion of qualifying wealth to the categories of people entitled to receive it.

Zakaat is not simply a charitable donation. When its conditions are fulfilled, it is an obligation that must be discharged according to Islamic principles.

The calculation depends on the type of wealth, the applicable Nisab threshold, the passage of the relevant lunar year where required, and other conditions established by Islamic law.
